Big Bash legends weekend knock up Friday 6.6.25 Lindholme Beeches
6 bashers this year extended the Legends weekend with a knock up arranged on Beeches lake. The weather had changed again, lots of overnight rain and a cold wind blowing with a promise of rain showers to liven things up a little as well. The whole complex was under a lot of pressure with 2 big festivals, a couple of national qualifiers also days before so lots of bait would have been chucked in for the fish to feast on. Our club and myself have not fished Beeches for a few years since the addition of small tench and Ide, it would be interesting to see if they had grown.
6 pegs booked late and kindly given pegs 1 to 15 by Alex for us to space ourselves out. It was a walk which we are not used to nowadays as we have been booking park behind peg options recently however the lads bit the bullet, and it was either barrow or a few trips carrying to our locations. Paying on and draw done old style we quickly set off to the lake, to park our cars before the other matches, and off to our pegs to see what awaited us.
Peg 9 was my home for the day in first corner of the bay. Pegged under some trees in the shade with the cold wind blowing into my face, and in no mans land with no one close by for conversation, poor me. A quick rain shower setting up and then the sun came out to shine on those not in the shade.
Plan today was Bomb and method rod, pole at 2+3 and margin each side, I spent ten minutes with landing net removing branches and twigs that had blown into my peg or at least those I could get to and reach. I was late setting up, but that did not deter our keen timekeeper John Lanelly who tooted the whistle and everyone chucked out. John Utting didn't mess around with 5 fish in first 20 minutes, Indian also had a couple, these were the only guys I could see properly.
I chucked Bomb out with 8mm pellet to about 20m in bowl and loose fed 6's over top with catty timing in between gusts of wind. It was about 40 minutes before the rod wrapped round and first fish netted. Spent time on bomb and had to wait for bites but when they came there was no mistaking the carp or F1 bites as they were like the old Beeches aggressive bites of old. Then it was hang on and try turn the fish to come into you. I did catch some Tench and Ide where the bites were not as aggressive. The Ide caught were now about 10 inch in length and Tench from 8 ounce to over a pound so both species have put some weight on and if caught can help build a net up. the carp and F1's are a lot more plentiful and back to good weights again.
The match was a busy one, I stuck the bomb out as it was producing although some quiet times between bites as fish did not stay on my feed, the bites were certainly positive so no messing around on them. Didn't do to bad on lost fish and breakages, two x 7lb hook lengths I think. I didn't try the 2+2 line but went into a margin line each side of the peg, not tight up as I could see roots and branches spelling disaster. Right hand side on worm gave 1 fish and left hand side larger fish could be seen and gave 3 plus numerous lost ones and more terminal tackle breakages due to the branches and tree roots. Ground bait brought them in and worm or sweetcorn on the hook was resulting in bites. Finish weight 50-9 was my reward and a busy rewarding day had been had. Majority of weight on the bomb with 8mm pellet.
Peg 3 Paul Whitehouse. 66-7 Alternating rod and pole. Lost a few fish in reeds to his left so tried to avoid this area. Again caught steady through the match for a winning weight.
Peg 6 Andy Woolfall 54-12. Spent first hour and half fishing across on his rod and struggling for bites before switching to his pole and favoured paste. Afterwards in reflection ( hindsight is always wonderful) wished he had gone paste from the off and his weight may have been enough.
Peg 7 Another "favoured peg" for John Lanelly resulted in 54-12. John alternated rod, pole lines in front and down margins and caught of and on all match.
Peg 9 Leo 50-9
Peg 13 Kev Indian Webster 62-3 and regretting loosing a big fish late on. Kev alternated bomb rod and pole lines in front and to his margins. Starting a pole line in front whilst priming a bomb line he had a couple on his pole then they were waiting when he chucked his bomb out. Kev alternated and worked rod and pole to try keep catching when bites dried up.
Peg 15 and longest walk was John Utting who returned 46-5 on the scales. John set off at pace with 5 early fish on his rod then they seemed to move on. He had long periods of no bites all time but did have a good run from his margin late on and wished they had turned up earlier.
A good even contest with everyone catching and weights fairly even. A couple of fish could have made all the difference and most of us lost a few good fish. It w.ould also be interesting to fish a maggot approach for the Tench and Ide as the size of these would soon build a good weight as well and bites would be more frequent, I would suggest.
Many thanks to timekeeper John Lanelly, and the whole team for assisting in weighing in and carrying each others tackle back and forth to pegs and cars. Jhn Lanelly has a major breakdown on his troller with its drive motor requiring service and repairs so it was a push job. John Utting did a tandem loading Indians tackle with his own on his trolley
The weather, despite threatens of thunderstorms was unusually very kind to us. A couple of showers only, the wind remained cold however the sun made several appearances and those sat in the sunshine benefited from taking their coats off. The guy on peg 9 sat freezing all day huddled up in the cold shade facing the chilling wind. As expected the wind dropped off and the sun shone for the weigh in and gave the best part of the day.
Beeches has also has a good makeover with a lot of bankside vegetation trimmed back, trees tidied up as well. It is still by far the most scenic of Lindholme lakes and offers all methods to be tried out depending on which peg is drawn.
End of the match and the two johns drove home whilst Indian, Paul, new roomie Woolfy and myself retired to Mallard Lodge for the weekend with beer, food, and loads of laughs on the agenda. Woolfy brought another level of much needed sophistication to the evening with wine and cheese for us to devour as well.
The Friday knock up extends the legends weekend and should be added to your diaries for 2026.
