Big Bash Wrinkly knock up 13 Oaktree Fishery 23.4.2025

Numbers back up to 9 Wrinkly Big Bashers for this Midweek knock up at Oaktree Fishery Graizelound on the Isle of Axeholme. Weather settling slightly with warmer nights, sunshine and clouds promised and another dry day.
A few years since as a club we visited this fishery and again it has been further developed with more caravans and now lodges are being erected around the main donut lake. A proper little community is being assembled in the peaceful tranquillity of the location. The only disturbance is the sound of the breeze and birdsong. Not too many ducks or geese either however you have to watch your bait tray though as the magpies are much more clever and bigger thief's than you can imagine.

The Snake lake has 18 pegs however some need avoiding if at all possible. Pegs 1 and 2 have a aerator rope between them. Pegs 9 and 10 similar but 9 is fishable. Peg 18 has overgrown sedges in front of it and considering this is where the carp are reported to live, I would expect lots of rigs being lost. Park behind your peg however grass bank may be slippy if wet. Pegs are wooden pallets but large enough to park yourself on. Sedges and reeds line fishing bank and there are areas of sedges in the water on opposite bank, also some overhanging bushes to fish to. These sedges reduce the width of the lake slightly however it is still between 12 and 14m, Depth on peg 7 were 12 to 18 inch in margin, 4 feet down track and 2 feet on opposite side bank. Approx. 10 between pegs however with contours of lake you can peg side to side and its not an issue.

Arrived to find out my original thoughts on pegging were up the creek due to aerator so a quick short walk with Mr Utting and it was soon re pegged. Massive welcome back to Mick McGann back in the bash group who was looking very well. 9 anglers split into 2 sections for draw,  all paid on timely manner and draw completed for 8.15.

Peg 7 for yours truly and plan was a simple pole approach. 12m to far bank, a line down the track on bottom, and a margin rig  either side. Maggots, expanders, paste, corn and more maggots. Groundbait and micros for feeding.
Slow start on 2+2 down track, first small roach in net. Then a skimmer and then an Ide. Followed Neighbour John Lanelly and Smiler on peg 3 across to far bank as they were catching well but only got a couple of small Ide before a better size fish, still a lot slower than John and smiler. Ended up swapping and changing lines to try get fish consistently. Noticed on hand feeding the 2_2 line swirls as fish up in water and not on bottom where I wanted them, set up a shallow line to try this approach. Kept missing more bites than catching them so changed hook length and hook size down from 16 to 18 and single maggot then started to catch better fish as fish more confident on the single maggot and smaller hook. It was now 1pm however I did manage dot out a run of larger ide together accompanied with skimmers. Also noticed that when clouds came over the fish backed away, it seemed they preferred the sunshine and brightness to respond shallow. Last couple of hours back rotating lines, did try margins for two small touches but no proper bites. Also had some skimmers on paste full depth. Fish caught, roach, perch, Chub, skimmers and super Ide. Engaged once into a barbel who simply took off and never stopped. You are torn between tackling up lightly for the volume fishing of Ide etc. however if a Barbel or large resident carp takes a fancy you struggle to land it as you are under gunned. 29lb 11 and 2nd in section, maggots best bait shallow ( used about 3 pints)

Peg 3 Smiler set off very well and then had some slow sections in the match. He did manage to land 3 Barbel but lost about 6 I think. Maggots best bait and he put 36-15 on scales for section win.

Peg 5 John Lanelly also set off very well fishing full length to far bank shallow feeding by catty and fish a chuck for a long period. Had a very good morning session landing a good stamp of Ide regularly. Fish backed off mid match and John tried different lines looking for bites. He also spent last hour in his margin looking for a barbel  and achieved his goal with a couple, but it could have cost him the match. It didn't however and surprising the weight was thought much more than it was, as the ides weight is deceiving. 64lb 7 for match win, well done John.

Peg 7 Leo 29-11

Peg 9 Steve Guy. Steve started well on 2+2 down track and was catching well before they drifted off. Steve worked hard as usual trying to locate and engage try as he might could not get a bite fishing long to the sedges. He was left with lines down track and margin swims taking  26-15 to  the scales.

Peg 11 Mick Roche adopted a shallow approach as his previous successful visit to the venue. The majority of his
majority of his fish came from the far bank he put43-9 on the scales.

Peg 13 saw John Utting going head to head with Mick, John landed 1 small barbel and totalled 42-7 on the scales. John also fished long, short and margins and also lost some fish.

Peg 15 saw Mick McGlann with us. Mick not seen the water before started on rod and pellet but with help from his neighbours was soon on his pole and took 13-6 to  the scales, well done Mick.

Peg 16 and peg 17 saw the battle of dad and lad Websters. Both adopting a live and dead maggot approach the bragging rights came out in favour of Ryan on peg 17 who took 60-5 to the scales for a section win. Kev Indian Webster weighed in 53-9 (including 12-10 of Barbel) for second in section.

Overall I think the lake fished well and everyone caught a few fish. Only one small ish carp was caught by Ryan so the weights caught were silvers. We were told there were a couple of 100lb weights a few days earlier and if the fish stay on the feed it is understandable. The ide are very large stamp , 12 inch long and 4 inch deep however their weight is deceiving. I guess you need a gallon of  maggots to keep them happy if on the feed. I guess we will re visit the fishery in the near future for another go, or possibly the donut lake and some carp.

One watch out is a  rule on the length of lash. it isnt displayed on website or rule board but supposed to be in the office. Heu ho.

Many thanks to John Utting for assistance pegging, Match winner John Lanelly for time keeping and Kev and Ryan for the weighing in. A great team effort once again.

Next knock up in Wednesday 30th and looking to go to Strip at Lindholme. Please be in touch if interested.

Next Bash summer league match is at Woodhouse Grange Saturday 26th.
