Big Bash Wrinkly knock up 12 Springvale Duke Lake 16.4.25
Depleted numbers to 4 wrinklies for this weeks knock up however Sue honoured the pegs previously given to us from 3 to 12 on Duke Lake. These start on first bank as you approach the lake from the portacabin car park working to the right (Duchess Lake). Higher numbers are on far bank working back to the cabin. The lake depth today on checking was just over 2 feet deep at 2 + 3 distance out which was a surprise for everyone. Margins on peg 7 ranged from 9 inch to 14 inch 1m from the bank as well.
Weather was definitely cooler than of late, there had been some heavy rainfall the past 24 hours and we had a very cold, gusty awful wind blowing right to left, from over our backs and then back right to left again.
Advice from the bailiffs were the early pegs should produce and with the room we had we chose 3,5,7,9 with John Utting drawing the furthest peg away from the chickens so no distraction as per his last visit to Golden 1. There was another small club match of 9 anglers on the opposite bank in the top corner who had to suffer a head wind all day. Didn't envy those guys much. We all had 2 coats on hoodies and winter hats on to fend off the wind.
My set up was method rod, bomb rod, 2 + 2 maggot line (as this was furthest I could hand feed in the wind) pellet line at 2 + 3 at 11 o'clock and margin to my right in front of some small reeds tucked away nicely so I thought in 14 inch of water.
Fishing 10 to 4 we were hoping the promise of rain would hold off for us, however with 2 pegs between us and a blustery wind it made it hard for banter and chatting to each other.
Fed my lines and I chose to go onto maggot line hoping silvers would start to feed and also thinking carp would follow. 15 minutes into the match before first bite and an Ide graced my net. This won the first fish award and was soon followed by John Utting and Steve Guy also opening their campaign. As you can gather, the bites were surprisingly slow for Springvale. The bait presentation was really hard as we had 3 inch waves right to left and a very strong tow left to right. To counter this I laid on the bottom by about 3 inch trying to keep a stationary bait and float. I was also fishing 3 or 4 red maggots as this seemed to work on the other lake a couple of weeks ago. Progress was slow, very slow, no Ide showing but skimmers were slowly being caught.
I chucked the method out about 25m using micros and Scopex wafter, again bites were slow and very strange from skimmers and the occasional wrap round off crucian carp. I had been feeding 8mm fishery pellets over this area. Bomb tried with corn, nothing, and rotated back onto pole line. 2pm I tried corn again and rod violently wrapped round after 5 minutes for an angry carp to grace my net after giving me a tow around the lake. The shallow lake meant the carp fought like Holmedale fish as they have no depth to run in. this was quickly followed by 2 more in 2 chucks and I got my hopes up that the carp had turned up on my pellet feed and were going to finally play. I don't think so, they left as fast as they had arrived. Back rotating lines, tried margin several times for no indications at all and then a bream and crucian on bomb and corn before a carp last cast of match. 27-1, split 12-10 carp, 16-7 silvers and thanks for coming. 2 carp were lost on pole maggot line however due to light tackle there was no stopping them.
In reflection and with my friend hindsight, with the silvers not playing today, should I have sat on the bomb and corn when I found this is what the carp were taking. I had tried it earlier for nothing, after the 3 fish maybe I should have sat it out. This is not saying I didn't give it 15 minutes after my last fish, but I felt the need to move on as there were no indications at all
Peg 3 Saw John Lanelly who tucked himself up try9ing to have his back to the wind as much as possible. John fished double maggot on pole lines and worm in his margin where he snaffled a few carp to put alongside a silver net mostly consisting on skimmers. John returned 45-14 for second in match with 27-6 carp and 18-8 silvers mix.
Next door neighbour on peg 5 was Steve Guy who also had a slow start with silvers also hard to come by. Steve also tried method in front but his best success and the first carp amongst the group came from his method chucked in close where he could hand feed. Steve chucked out, waited and got his reward with a carp. He also had to move on and go back on pole lines a few times trying to find bites and keep silvers supplementing the occasional carp. Steve returned 37-8 split 13-12 carp, 23-12 silvers.
Peg 9 saw John Utting who was facing the most wind on our bank as it came past the tree line. John had tried to reach the island to his right with a 45 gram feeder but casting in the wind wasn't consistent enough. This resigned him to a pole approach although he did start on the method whilst feeding pole lines. Once he saw me catch my first fish John followed onto his pole line. John fished a steady match feeding ground bait and maggot and fishing a single red on an 18 hook. He tried his feeder a few times, also margin line but nothing so it was back on red maggot and pole. The reward was his landing net regularly kept dipping in the water and skimmers were brought in. Johns patience and consistency rewarded him with 49-4 and a match win, well done John.
The wind dropped slightly at about 3:30 and also the sun came out giving us the best time of the day. I guess it would have been interesting if these conditions had been present all day.
Next Wrinkly knock up booked at Oaktree Grazeland on snake lake, the book will close on Friday 18th, great support so far, thank you.
Next Big Bash match is 26th April at Woodhouse Grange, please confirm attendance and pay on to help Admin.
