Title: lockdown topics
Post by: Leo Martin on January 17, 2021, 16:16:37
So we are almost a week into the latest lockdown and loads of different views on travelling to fish and "local".

what fisheries are within a 5 mile radius of your location??

"local". Dearne and Dove canal, very close. Good bread punch fishing. River Dearne, planned to fish it this winter regardless of travel restrictions. Hoping for a few chub. Elsecar Res', hard work in winter. Lowfield lakes, mixed fishery, plenty of ide, ten minutes drive. Barnburgh lakes, mainly F1's. Hook a duck fishing in summer, always a few bites in winter and bonus - no mud!
I've not fished for a month!! How many anglers are actually able to fish given the current weather and how many are genuinely keeping "local"?

Looked at smithies yesterday, banks are steeper than Messingham Gange and Sands so parked that idea.
Ancholme had been pulled off must have lost 3 feet of water, very heavily coloured not too inviting either.
Guess there wont be many cobwebs to dust off tackle due to cold weather.
More "rest" for the old leg I'm afraid less risky currently.

Living in the isle i'm surrounded by loads:

Owston Ferry Fisheries
Fourways
Bank End
Candy Corner
Torne bank
Oak tree
Lindholme
Tyram

Just to name a fee commercials

Had a good day yesterday at Lindholme - most lakes were covered with ice but managed a peg near the shop (aerator was on) just fished rod all day with Bread, corn and maggot - caught F1's and carp but never got a silver fish all day, yet Big Glenn in next peg had roach, skimmers, chubb,  F1's and carp...strange.

You're fortunate to have such a choice of decent commercials locally. Would love a dabble at Lindholme but at 33 miles away I wouldn't be able to justify it as a necessary journey  :(

I fancied a dabble on the Dearne but it's very high and colourful so will be having a bash at Barnburgh.

Poor old Smiler - his one and only maggot - good job he never catches anything or he would loose that too.... ;D ;D ;D

BAD NEWS!! Smiler caught a greedy little perch and that was it for his maggot, shame really they had become quite attached.

Ice on most of the pegs limited our choice of pond, it had to be the middle one that had one bank clear, although it meant that we were pegged next to each other without much room between us, handy for conversation though.

Smiler had his little perch. John had a pleasant day "nice to get out". I had one F1 and a skimmer on 4mm bread punch, Foxey basking in the sun drenched end peg christened his new pole with a couple of F1's, a skimmer and the ever reliable winter fish - a rudd! All on bread. Two others on the same bank didn't have a bite.

Still it was "nice to get out"!!   ;D ;D ;D

Think last time I was out was 28th December fished Curlew at Messingham . Weather been to cold for me to venture out so not been to bad sat at home , but I have new Shimano feeder rod waiting to be collected from Lindholme but with travel restrictions finding it difficult to collect ! Don't know what travel guidelines are for shopping / click n collect but as the weather is looking ok for Thursday this week I might be tempted.
I know this is cheating sort off but as Lindholme is a customer and they have a small issue that I need to call in to check out .
Was thinking of killing two birds and all that . Fingers crossed I have a job to look at in Wheatley donny in the morning then just a quick drive on to Lindy to check a fault ,click n collect and a couple of of hours trying new rod out .

Am I doing wrong ? Come on guys  let me have it be honest and ruthless

In my opinion, for what it's worth, if you were going fishing there it would be wrong because it's not local to you. If you were going there to collect your rod the question would be is that really a necessary journey. However if your going there for work then it is acceptable, plus your helping a worthy cause  ;D

I was there on Saturday and as my lad wanted to try temp the big pike out of Loco I decided to try a bit more feeder fishing. After chatting to Alex i said 19 but he said get on 20 or 21 so i wasn't far off the right area. Turned up on Loco and Chicken was on 19 so i went on 21 with wind off our back it was a good call. i started on bomb n bread for the first 1hr and a half, never got a single liner so cracked out the method. Fishing at about 35 / 40m i had a small F1 (went for a pee and lad nicked my rod and caught a small mirror carp). Chicken one of the regular open lads was catching well, all F1's and a good stamp, so off i went and had a good chat with him and he told me a couple of little pointers. Sat back on box and changed a couple of things (thanks chicken) and straight away caught F1's ranging from 2lb up to 5/6lb - ended up having a great day and packed up after catching 20 F1's and a small skimmer. With the weather being cold and all the Ice going in the lake i couldn't have asked for more really. Cracking winter day.

Oh and the lad didn't catch any pike even walking around the lake trying different swims.... :police: :police:
